Matt Shakman’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” also features the return of the cosmic being Galactus and his enigmatic herald, the Silver Surfer. In the film, the Fantastic Four face off against the Silver Surfer and Galactus as the world devourer threatens the safety of their planet — and their family.

Julia Garner‘s performance as Silver Surfer in the recently released The Fantastic Four: First Steps is receiving praise from fans around the world. Garner takes on the role of Shalla-Bal’s version of the character in the movie,

First Steps finally gives us what fans have been waiting for: Silver Surfer and Galactus in all their cosmic glory.

First Steps is in theaters now. In the lead up to Marvel Studios’ latest film, there was a ton of merchandise for fans to gush over. The retro-future vibe of the film worked in the marketing's favor,

She falls in love with Norrin Radd, who is the original Silver Surfer in the comics. He is turned into the cosmic power being after offering to become Galactus' herald, in return for sparing Shalla-Bal's home planet. Footage from First Steps sees that Shalla-Bal has seems to be the one who has taken on this mantle instead.

Not only is it perfectly fine that the MCU's Silver Surfer is a woman, but it's actually the perfect decision for the story told in "Fantastic Four: First Steps."

Shalla-Bal was the Zenn-Lavian royal heir and romantic partner of a brilliant scientist from the utopian planet of Zenn-La named Norris Radd, who became the herald of Galactus known as the Silver Surfer.

Garner also noted that she’s portraying Shalla-Bal, a female iteration of the Silver Surfer, and not Norrin Radd, the male version of the character who was played Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne in 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

Is the new “Fantastic Four” movie fantastic? No, and not everyone will love the amount of downtime in this one. But good is good enough for a Marvel superhero movie these days.
